Five Natural Sites Where Humans Threaten Biodivers

Everglades National Park
United States

Romney Comments on Working Moms, Ann Says Women Ar

ST LOUIS, Mo. – Mitt Romney made his first public statement regarding stay-at-home moms after days of coverage that focused on his wife Ann’s back-and-forth with a Democratic strategist who accused her of never having a job Best Tattoo Kits, saying he believes “all moms are working moms,” before inviting his wife on stage to a rousing applause.

“There is one more person I would like to introduce,” said Romney at the National Rifle Association’s annual meeting. “This is a hero of mine. I happen to think that all moms are working moms. And if you have five sons, your work is never over. My sweetheart, Ann Romney.”

“Yeah, say something,” Romney urged his wife.

And she did – delivering an assertive defense of those who chose to stay home with their children.

“Let me give a shout-out to all moms that are working,” she said. “And by the way, to all dads that are working. We love all of you.”

Ann Romney was embroiled in a media firestorm this week when Hilary Rosen, a Democratic strategist Damascus Steel Tattoo Machines, said during an interview on CNN that Mrs. Romney, a mother of five, has “never worked a day in her life.”

“You know, I like to think that you are only, as a parent Tattoo Machine Tattoo, as happy as your saddest child. And you never stop being a parent. Our children have grown now. They have children of their own. But it is such a wonderful opportunity for me to think about the heritage we are leaving our children,” said Mrs. Romney.

“You know, I heard recently something, how women were being referred to as a special interest group,” said Mrs. Romney. “And I thought to myself, ya know, really only Washington could do that.

“There is only one part of that phrase that is correct. Women are special!” she said, the crowd erupting in applause.

Mrs. Romney quickly segued her remarks to focus on the economy – the cornerstone of her husband’s campaign.

“Women are talking about the economy and jobs and about the legacy of debt that we are going to leave our children and we are mad about it. And we are going to do something about it in November,” she said. “With your help we need to make sure that we keep this country strong and fighting for the right reasons.”

Government bombarded as Slipper stands down

The Coalition tried to suspend crossbench MP Craig Thomson and return former Speaker Harry Jenkins to the chair as Question Time boiled over in the lead-up to Tuesday night's budget.

Coalition frontbencher Christopher Pyne moved to have Mr Jenkins reinstated after Peter Slipper stepped down from the Speakership.

Mr Slipper handed over to his Deputy, Labor MP Anna Burke, amid allegations of sexual harassment and travel rorts, made by former aide James Ashby.

Mr Pyne immediately moved to suspend standing orders, saying “the clock should be restarted and the period from November 24 to today should be repaired for the good of the Parliament”.

“The standing of the Parliament and politicians has never been lower in the eyes of the Australian public,” Mr Pyne said.

But the Opposition's 51st attempt to have standing orders suspended ended in a tied vote of 72-72. With a majority required, the motion failed.

A short time later, Mr Pyne was on his feet again, this time moving that the member for Dobell, Mr Thomson Discount Christian Audigier Clothing, be suspended from the House for 14 days.

Mr Thomson is the suspended Labor MP who has been accused of misusing Health Services Union funds before entering Parliament.

When Ms Burke refused to allow the motion to be put, Mr Pyne again moved to suspend standing orders.

The second vote on standing orders was defeated 72-70.

Mr Slipper Herve Leger sale, who replaced Mr Jenkins as Speaker in a deal designed to shore up Labor's numbers in the Parliament, made a brief statement before stepping down.

“I believe I am entitled, like any other person, to have the presumption of innocence,” he said.

“I am also entitled to have these matters dealt with by proper process.”

Mr Slipper attacked the media coverage of the allegations against him and said he looked forward to returning to the role and “completing what I have begun”.

“It is unfortunate that trial by media seems to have become the order of the day in this country,” he said.

In standing down, Mr Slipper said he placed “great importance” on the institution of Parliament.

“As Speaker, I have sought to improve the standing of the House by introducing reforms which have been supported by all sides and to ensure the House works in the way intended by the practices and procedures of the House,” he said.

“My understanding is that there is general appreciation in the broader community of what I am seeking to achieve as Speaker.

“There is much more to be done and I look forward to completing what I have begun.”

Mr Slipper's departure from the role is significant because the Government loses Ms Burke's vote on the floor of Parliament. It is believed Mr Slipper cannot vote as a regular MP either.

Moral core

In moving the motion to suspend standing orders, Mr Pyne said the Government's association with Mr Slipper and Mr Thomson had given a public face to “the erosion of Labor's moral core”.

“I cannot imagine anything more gut wrenching for [Labor's] party faithful,” he said.

Leader of Government Business in the House, Anthony Albanese, replied by taunting Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, saying he did not have the “ticker” to move the motion.

Mr Albanese told Parliament Mr Slipper was entitled to the presumption of innocence and fair judicial process.

“In this place, if every rumour about the behaviour of individuals is accepted as being absolutely correct and acted on, then it will be a pretty empty chamber,” he said.

“People are entitle to a presumption of innocence and people are entitled to have proper processes and assessments of any charges made.”

Double trouble

Mr Slipper defected from the Liberal Party last year in a deal struck with Prime Minister Julia Gillard which saw him take on the Speaker role.

In April, News Limited papers published allegations made by Mr Ashby, who accused Mr Slipper of continually pursuing a sexual relationship with him and misusing taxpayer-funded taxi vouchers.

At the end of last month, following the civil and criminal allegations made against Mr Slipper, Ms Gillard said she had asked him to extend his time away from the Speaker's chair.

Mr Slipper's move has put more pressure on the Government as it deals with the scandal surrounding Mr Thomson, who suspended himself from the Labor Party following the furore over allegations he misused a union credit card.

Hugo Boss

Hugo Chávez

Recent accounts of Hugo Chávez’s politicized necrophilia may seem almost too lurid to believe, but I can testify from personal experience that they may well be an understatement. In the early hours of July 16—just at the midnight hour, to be precise—Venezuela’s capo officiated at a grisly ceremony. This involved the exhumation of the mortal remains of Simón Bolívar Tattoo Supplies, leader of Latin America’s rebellion against Spain, who died in 1830. According to a vividly written article by Thor Halvorssen in the July 25 Washington Post Tattoo Supplies, the skeleton was picked apart—even as Chávez tweeted the proceedings for his audience—and some teeth and bone fragments were taken away for testing. The residual pieces were placed in a coffin stamped with the Chávez government’s seal. In one of the rather free-associating speeches for which he has become celebrated, Chávez appealed to Jesus Christ to restage the raising of Lazarus and reanimate Bolívar’s constituent parts. He went on:

I had some doubts, but after seeing his remains, my heart said, “Yes, it is me.” Father, is that you, or who are you? The answer: “It is me, but I awaken every hundred years when the people awaken.”

As if “channeling” this none-too-subtle identification of Chávez with the national hero, Venezuelan television was compelled to run images of Bolívar, followed by footage of the remains, and then pictures of the boss. The national anthem provided the soundtrack. Not since North Korean media declared Kim Jong-il to be the reincarnation of Kim Il Sung has there been such a blatant attempt to create a necrocracy, or perhaps mausolocracy, in which a living claimant assumes the fleshly mantle of the departed.

Simón Bolívar’s cadaver is like any other cadaver, but his legacy is a great deal more worth stealing than that of Kim Il Sung. Gabriel García Márquez’s novel The General in His Labyrinth is one place to begin, if you want to understand the combination of heroic and tragic qualities that keep his memory alive to this day. (In New York, his equestrian statue still dominates the intersection of the Avenue of the Americas and Central Park South.) The idea of a United States of South America will always be a tenuous dream, but in his bloody struggle for its realization, Bolívar cut a considerable figure, as he did in his other capacities as double-dealer, war criminal, and serial fornicator, also lovingly portrayed by Márquez.

In the fall of 2008, I went to Venezuela as a guest of Sean Penn’s, whose friendship with Chávez is warm. The third member of our party was the excellent historian Douglas Brinkley, and we spent some quality time flying around the country on Chávez’s presidential jet and bouncing with him from rally to rally at ground level, as well. The boss loves to talk and has clocked up speeches of Castro-like length. Bolívar is the theme of which he never tires. His early uniformed movement of mutineers—which failed to bring off a military coup in 1992—was named for Bolívar. Turning belatedly but successfully to electoral politics, he called his followers the Bolivarian Movement. Since he became president, the country’s official name has been the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. (Chávez must sometimes wish that he had been born in Bolivia in the first place.) At Cabinet meetings, he has been known to leave an empty chair, in case the shade of Bolívar might choose to attend the otherwise rather Chávez-dominated proceedings.

Rob Dyrdek’s “kick flip” stunt in a Chevrolet Sonic effectively sealed his place in the hallowed halls of stunt driver lore. As it turns out Alain Silberstein Replica Watches, actually pulling off a 360-degree barrel roll in a vehicle is one of the most challenging stunts one can perform. Driving on two wheels? Cakewalk. Knocking down a series of buses stacked on their ends? As easy as sucking pea soup through a crazy straw. The barrel roll requires stacks of mathematical calculations to account for everything from the vehicle’s weight to its speed and the exact rotation angle of each ramp.

He’s one of a select few stunt drivers to do the deed Versace Replica Watches, and Popular Mechanics has taken a look at those who have tackled the automotive barrel roll in the past.
